That phrase 'descendant communities' is so compelling and challenging. Some cultures have them, but many don't. Plato feared that the new tech of his day (literacy) would destroy memory and living history. We may be left with chronological data but no stories or values.

As he shows in the book, the stories from those descendant communities form the connective tissue in the history. So much of Hannah’s life would have been unrecoverable without them.

Then, as you suggest, you think about everything that already has and will vanish from memory because there aren’t similar recipients and transmitters of the stories.
