I have been putting off a video on “betrayal”(I make video on YouTube) because of the emotion of the topic. I was supposed to film it yesterday but was too tired from my day to record it. I was using this slogan as a reason to post it because of how true and accurate it is:
“If you are silent about your pain, they’ll kill you and say you enjoyed it.”
- Zora Neale Hurston
I had never known anyone who also knew this author becuase I just read up on her. I’m scrolling on SubStack today and what do I see? The author of my topic in exactly what I was supposed to record today. As a man close to God, I know synchronicities are used to “wake you up”, this is the beauty of God! Thank you for posting this 🙏🏽
Thanks for this illuminating introduction to Hurston’s work. In the limited works I have read by Hurston, I value her vitalized voice & her absolute refusal to find definition through the expectations of others. She is so refreshingly unpredictable in her repudiation of being trapped in the service of any agenda that limits her personal agency—perhaps the ultimate form of cathartic expression & personal growth in her own life that she models fearlessly for her appreciative audience today.
Thanks for this. She must have been a rather remarkable person. I have never read any Hurston, but she is one of those people on my list of "authors you need to get to." Would like to read "Their Eyes Were Watching God" when the chance arises.
I had never heard of her until my son had to read her for a high school AP English course. After he finished TEWWG, he brought it to me and told me he thought I would like it. He was right, it was excellent. Thanks for this insight into her life.
A very interesting review and also timely for me. I have just started reading Hurston, starting with "I Love Myself When I Am Laughing: A Zora Neale Hurston Reader". If you want a brief intro to her vivid, unique and perceptive personality, try reading the short and funny essay "How It Feels to Be Colored Me".
The problem with Substack is that my TBR list gets longer by the day. You've just made it even longer 😄
"Research is just formalized curiosity." I love this, and I might start using it when people ask me what I do: "I get paid to be curious." 🤣
If no one believes in synchronicities read this:

I had no idea about her background even though I’ve read her books. Many thanks
TeWWG is on my shelf to read. Moving up on the list now.
Interesting to think ones memoir doesn’t have to tell all and tell it true, just slant.

I had trouble getting into Their Eyes... so I switched to the audio, which is read by Ruby Dee and OMG is it good.
