There is one detail that jumped out at me in this review that I'm super curious about now, the red notebook. In Auster's 4321 there is also a red notebook, referenced at times as the scarlet notebook. I don't know if there is any deeper meaning or connection between various books with the red notebook serving as the connecting thread or if it is simply a fun easter egg he likes to throw in as a detail across his stories! Great review Joel!

I could easily believe the connection is intentional. I need to read more Auster, that much I know for sure.

Nice, and same here. I dove into the deep end with 4321, which was my first read of his as well!

I've been wanting to read this trilogy for years. Your enjoyable review tipped the scales and I've added it to my TBR stack on my nightstand. You write so well, it's a pleasure to read, no matter what you are writing about :-)

Wow, what a weird trilogy of stories. As I read your review, Kafka's The Trial came to mind.

I haven’t read it! But from what I know about it, that tracks. I need to go down the Kafka trail soon.
