I’d decided to skip yet another memoir of trauma but your review makes it shine, so I’ll revisit. Thanks.

Some sing of beauty

Some tell otherwise,

Kindness to everyone

Knows no spiteful malaise,

Seeking no fight

And unite in the light,

Cut is not needed

Peace needs no knives.

“Beware starting a fight with a novelist: The writer not only gets the last word, he fashions his words as he chooses.”

Such a great line from an insightful review!

I haven't read the book yet, but I have read some other reviews, and I am more likely to read it now because of the profound theme that you were able to find in Rushdie's writing.

Good review. I read it and generally liked it for the ultimate message. But, his occasional inserts of politics were irritating….

I get that.

Thank you for your review. I haven’t been able to decide whether or not to read the book, as I found the horrific attack terrifying. Now I’m thinking that maybe I can handle it. Because of Rushdie’s humor and tenderness.

It’s all very approachable, and his humor and tenderness is part of the joy of the book. It’s really great.

I am very interested to read this. I actually have never read any of his works but he has been on my TBR for a long time.

I’ve only ever read this memoir and his essays. I really need to try a novel or two. Interestingly, he wouldn’t recommend the one he’s most famous for :)
