There’s another step to this I think. What we are trying to do with the things we desire. Material items really pile up the more we are adrift spiritually. A little spiritual gift, like wisdom, or even a compliment, is more filling than whatever item.

Very true. Burgis doesn’t really hit on contentedness, though you could see it as part of his idea of “thick desires.”
