Only one of William the Conquror's ships sank, drowning all aboard, on crossing the channel to Kent.

It was the ship carrying his Soothsayer..

May have to read this given how much of my professional life has dealt with forecasting and or dealing with the (obvious to me) unforeseen consequences of decisions

This sounds like a fascinating book; thanks for making me aware of it. Re: politicians not having good foresight, I constantly remind my high school students of Thomas Sowell's observation, "There are no solutions, only tradeoffs." EVERYTHING has some sort of cost, even if it's not initially apparent.

Very true. That’s one of the great lessons I learned from Sowell as well. So simple, yet so profound. Only math offers solutions; everything else is tradeoffs.
