Thanks for all the useful tidbits and links. I know nothing about James Daunt but can vouch for his effectiveness - at least, based on the sheer volume of Daunt Books bags I see every day on the tube!
Bookstore love 🩷🩷!! There are studies on how forest bathing and being in nature has psychological and physical benefits in terms of slowing the heart rate and relieving stress. I think something similar happens to me when I walk in a bookstore. I want to put a plug in for McSweeney's who makes the most beautiful books. I get their McSweeney's Quarterly Concern and they push the limits of what a book is in amazing and gorgeous ways. I love to run my hand over the cover of many of the books as they have embossing and sometimes stitching! They had one that was a Trapper Keeper! Be still my Gen X heart 🩷🩷
That definitely happens to me inside a bookstore. It's the best exhale I know. I was on Fall Break last week at the beach and visited my favorite little local bookshop there, Sun Dog. Every time I step into that store I feel the weight of the world lifting—and a weight at the end of my arm when I leave, hauling out the books I bought :)

As far as I’m concerned, James Daunt is a bona fide hero. And Daunt Books, where he started, is wonderful.
Yes, total hero!
