My younger self knew even less than I do now, but some tidbits I was smart enough to preserve included a few odd copies of The University Bookman my old man had hanging around. Thanks for this…& Happy Kirktober!
The discarded bits. The "neglected things" and the "cultural debris". The living remnants of who and what we are and when. Art may be an effort towards the beautiful, the true, and the good, but it's at its best when it's made of what we've thrown away. When it takes what repulses us. When it takes our detritus and gives it back to us. Reformed, refashioned, renewed, reshaped, remade. It's task is "to turn trash treasure", Austin Kleon says, to show us wonder and intrigue where we wouldn't expect to see it.
Sloganeering and merely performative..good description of modern conservatism..really modern politicking in general..it has a cultish flavor, sectarianism, rabid partisanship disease..I’m also a fan of barristers..I have my set of Oxford English dictionaries in them and my collection of classical music CD’s.. have several stacks and love them..never bought any from levenger though..should have I saw them there nice quality..levenger was a great place one time..they changed for the worse in my opinion..bought many things from them in the 90’s like readers desk, rolling book carts, and book ends and lamps..their del ray beach store was amazing..I’m not Catholic but Calvinist, but Benedict XVI would be a good visitor like cardinal sarah..as always, good interview, interesting person..liked his description of the good life..
I never heard of Dr. Kirk before. Now I have another author to read.
The Politics of Prudence is a great place to begin. The Roots of American Order is a great place to continue.
I'll see about getting them. Thanks.
