Professor Phillips has the right idea- get them exposed to the work as soon as possible and make it meaningful to them by showing how it intersects with their lives.

"A culture that stops reading inherited literature can only live for the present. There is no past and there is no thinking about the future. The only thing that matters is “now.” Perfect. Love the interview.

On books for young men - Cicero's On Friendship and Old Age is an overlooked gem.

I read books as a young person because I saw them mentioned in encyclopedias and referenced in articles. If a description is intriguing enough, young people will go look for themselves.
