I have read this story many times. It is my second favorite. The Idiot tops the list of his books for me. The Brothers Karamazov gives us a glimpse into Russian culture during his time. A lot of drinking, not much sunlight, muddy streets, and not much hope. I see 3 ways to live life. One leads to murder or the inability to love. Another leads to confusion and and rejection of hope because "life isn't fair." The last example teaches us that we cannot walk this life alone. It must be in communion with people and with God. It isn't a perfect life. It is a life that teaches us to love others no matter who they are or what they have done. It shows the "earthyness" (I made that up) of walking with God. Our hands get dirty when we love others, when we love God by interacting with "the least of these."
